Sounds like the selector is stuck behind the, er, dealie. Take the tailshaft housing off and check the shift rods. You can probably fix it by only removing the input shaft plate, but you gotta know what you're doing.

Take the tailshaft housing off by unbolting the center bolts, then tap out the pin that holds the shifter cup/linkage in place.
