I had one,.. well not a Mach1. But a 77 Cobra Mustang II. 302 with a 2 barrel. Kinda boring and painfully slow in stock form,.. but just like any other 302,.. they work well with new heads, intake and cam.
Only the Cobra had the stripes,.. though those dont look factory anyway. The Mach1 was an option through out the 74 - 78 Mustang II run. Funny thing is there were 2.8 V6 Mach1's as well. 74 did not even have a V8 as an option. 75 they got a cleaned up grill with different turn signals. The Mach1 was mainly an appearance package and I think it added front and rear sway bars. They got a silver disco like dash panel and the steering wheel looked like the old Shelby 3 spoke steering wheels with the holes in them. Oh,.. and they had a snake in the horn,.. even though they werent Cobra's. LoL
I also had a 75 V8 coupe Mustang II and a few year later bought a 74 Gia that I wanted to turn into a race car but never panned out.
They are basically a Pinto. The main draw back is the small tranny tunnel which makes it difficult to use some transmissions,.. like a C6 wont fit at all. C4/C5 just barely fit. SBF fit nicely in there. A little tighter in the engine bay then a Fox,.. but unlike a fox,.. you can remove the inner fenders to get tons of room. Spring perches are built into the subframe,.. not the unibody. And IIRC they had rack and pinion steering,.. though not 100% on that. Used to see tons of them at the tracks back in the day.
