It depends how serious you want to get into this.

You can pick up a Nikon D300 body for about $1600.
It's a pretty serious camera, if you have never used a DSLR - I wouldn't recommend it...

If you are just starting off - wanting to pick this up as a hobby - get yourself a Nikon D40 and some nice lenses, you will be VERY happy and it will cost you only a fraction of what you were going to pay for that Sony.

The next step up from the D40 would be the D90 or a used D80. To be honest, the D80 has an almost identical metering system to the D40 and an inferior system to the D90. The only reason you would pick up a used D80 is if you couldn't afford the D90 and would like the capability of using AF lenses (The D40 doesn't have an internal motor). I use a D80 - and LOVE it.

This is a lot of information - if you have no idea what I'm taking about, pick up a D40. It's FANTASTIC intro DSLR camera for a very reasonable price.
