Actually its from 98-00 when they made the newer Rear Hatch Door for the Hatchbacks with the latch to open it unlike the 96-97 that only open with the key. That being said, you can use any of those years; 1998-2000.

BTW, you can use the 96-97 Rear Hatch Door you have if you want, but takes way too much work to make it work. In case you're interested here's what you do ...

You need the cable and lever as well as the Latch/Release. You will need to cut the hoop piece off of the 96-97 and weld it onto the 98-00. Then, you need to cut and weld the Release to the side of the 98-00 and finally route the cable as well as cut the sheet metal and plastic to fit the new release.
