My GTI had the transmission rebuilt 5 times at Reeves. Car was completely stock and had the original tires on it when I traded it in at 45k miles (One of the appointment schedulers at Reeves once implied I was beating on the car as well). I don't mind if things go wrong in a mass produced vehicle, it's when the dealers aren't capable of fixing the problem. My fathers jetta has the exact same drive train (1.8t 5spd). He has 103k on the car now and it's never given him a problem.
BTW reeves let me drive home once with a sway bar bolted only on one side (luckily the undertray was keeping it from hitting the road). The only reason I noticed it was because my transmission was leaking fluid about a week after the second rebuild so I was trying to see where it was coming from.
