I wouldn't call it a silly pony car war. Back in the day the Camaro sold well over 100,000 annually and as high as 280,000 in 1979. There are a lot of diehard GM fans that would jump on a Z28. Being that GM has made about a million stupid decisions for the past 30+ years, the demise of the Z28 can probably be counted as stupid decision 1,000,001.
The market place is quite different 30 years later. Gas 10 times more expensive these days, and the average buyer is no longer really concerned with performance, and more with utility, navi, and blue tooth connections. It would behoove GM to try a different sales strategy than what they've tried the last 30 years, yes? They should be refocusing their R&D efforts to build cars that appeal to the american buyers they have lost over the years.
