You will need to know which sending unit for the fuel tank you need as there is a split I believe around 87 or 89.Ford changed the resistance of the sender.If you still have the one out of the car and hopefully it is correct for the car there is a tag with a date on the sender and you should go by that.There are also other things that can make the gauge not read correctly so just dont condemn the sender right off the bat.
