The smoke and idling problems is the stock ecu getting owned trying to run the car properly. GET IT TUNED, and I'm 99% positive your friend didn't recirc his bov. Tell him to open the radiator cap and look for oil. Check the engine oil as well, if it looks like a chocolate milkshake something is wrong...

White smoke sweet smelling smoke = burning coolant.
Black smoke = unburnt fuel/rich (smells like gas)
