Speed traps to be setup on SR 54 Thursday to target "aggressive drivers". Here is the article as it appeared on TBO.com:
NEW PORT RICHEY - Pasco
deputies will conduct
Operation Speed Stop on Thursday.
Aggressive drivers and
speeders along S.R. 54 will be in their crosshairs.
The enforcement crackdown will start at 5:30 a.m. April 2, the Sheriff's Office announced.
Speed has played a part in many
traffic crashes on the state highway, according to Sheriff's
Office spokesman Kevin Doll. In 2008, there were 1,211 crashes resulting in 1,104 injuries and 14 deaths along the entire length of the major east-west route.
The "enhanced traffic enforcement" will concentrate on the section of S.R. 54 between Little Road and Interstate 75, Doll said in a press release.
The extra patrols will continue until about 4 p.m. Thursday.
Deputies in the
motorcycle unit and the Sheriff's Aggressive Driving Offender Watch, or SHADOW, undercover patrol
car program will be on the lookout for offenders.
Besides speeding violations,
enforcement efforts during this operation will concentrate on careless driving, violation of right-of-way, red light running, following too closely and other
traffic violations that are often a factor in traffic crashes, Doll noted
Might want to put off that North run until later in the month or at least do a slow pass first.
Yes I realize the date in the article cites last Thursday, but according to a FHP officer's wife, the staties are picking up where the locals left off over Easter weekend near the same stretch of road. I got pulled last Saturday on I-75 as they had speed traps setup at I-75 on the Route 56 overpass. Cops are just everywhere up there these days!
I guess the cigarette tax was first, now they are pushing the sugar tax on soft drinks, and traffic tickets are going up exponentially. Cops are now becoming the new traffic tax collectors and they need revenue to go up to pay for all the deficit spending!
