lso lets say if I buy it and really start getting into photography (which I hope I will) how long do you think it would be before I would need to upgrade to a better camera?
I started out with my D50, and had it for probably a year and a half, but I REALLY got into it all and excelled and picked up all the stuff faster than I thought I would, but honestly, the D50 is a little "slow" in todays terms of camera speed (burst shots) but it really doesnt matter unless you need the 6+ fps for sports and what not. And the iso performance is a little low, (rarely did I go over 4 or 800, because noise is pretty noticeable) BUT, if I could go back, I'd definitely have it as a backup. And if you need the camera for low light conditions, just buy a speed light (sb-600).
