I say Mod your car all you want... but if you start to hear some ticking noises pull to an oil change place put some 20w50 oil in it and sell that puppy QUICK. 
What about those of us (like Joe and I) with 1Gs? I paid $1k for my car (broken timing belt but then again it needs some serious TLC on the exterior) and I dont have to worry about crankwalk at all. Hell I have a nice big rod engine (good for high 11s stock) with a weak drivetrain (good for mid 12s)...but considering the cost of the vehicle I can afford to upgrade the xfer case and rearend later.
BTW you might run the same on the street...he just may run slower.
