My really close friend is a car sales man and we have talked a lot about his job. The thing is and what most people dont understand is like anywhere the dealership can only do so much. 90% if the time when they are discounting your car you are loosing on trade or fees. They have to balence the numbers out somewhere.

When people go in and say I want 10K for my trade in, but the dealer can only do 8K they will tell you sure and then make up the other 2K somewhere else. So the buyer feels like they got what they want and the dealer well they got what they need.

Car manufactures put a number on what they sell cars for and it cant go below that. Then the dealership has fees (insurance, lot porter, detail, gas, etc..) and then there is a pack for the sales man that says X amount of what they will get for that car when sold. So usually your margin for hagling is very small. My friend says you want to find out how low they will give you on the car do this.

1) Find car you like at dealer
2) Go online and find car on dealer listing sites.
3) double check ebay, auto trader, etc.. and see if that dealer has an internet sales devision. Look at the price of the online. This price is usually way under the window price because internet pricing is meant to bring customers in that have access to large amount of cars at one time (unlike a lot walk in).
4) Go back to dealer with print out of internet price but keep it to your self. Haggle on price, if they go lower then online you are good. If not then wait till all numbers are signed and on a sales order (they will ask you to sign this). Before signing pull out online price and tell them if they dont at least match you will walk. They will match... Then they will come back with new sales order. tripple check the numbers and make sure they reduced the price.
