It all really depends on the person's riding skill level...and also the person's coordination.

My first bike was a 1997 Katana 600cc. I had never riden before...not even a dirt bike. But I got comfortable on the bike quickly. 2 months later I got a 2000 GSXR 600, and never downed it once.

Depending on your size and coordination skills on a bike...I would get a used (1992-1997), medium CC (500-600) bike that is inexpensive (no more than $4k).

BTW, I dropped my Katana in the drive way and parking lots a couple of times, so dont get something you would cry over dropping as a first bike.
