Have you disconnected battery the wires to solonoid at all? Sounds like they may be wired backwards
which one? theres one on the firewall that makes the "click" when i try to turn it over... but tracing the wires it goes to the alternator battery and somewhere else (possably the starter), we didnt touch anything but took out the starter and took off the smaller motor/solonoid (one that pushes the gear out) and it was hard to move it in and out not sure if thats normal. i looked and teh solonoid on the firewall is only $17, the starter is a it more at 140 and it has the smaller actuator motor, i was trying to see if i could just find the smaller motor because we jumped the wire and got the starter to spin and we have power at the starer when i turn the ignition.

go figure used car / someone else headache.....
