Well, If your telling me a seperate chambered box is harder to make because it is harder to build then your an idiot. If your building boxes already it should be pretty easy to take the math you already know and move some numbers around.

I'm not saying open chambers will never work but if you have the room then do seperate.

More expensive? If you dont have an extra $10 to spend on some wood then you prob shouldnt be building a system anyways.

I'm not saying that I cant tell if a sub is blown, either.

Tuning is much easier to do if you have seperate chambers as well, Though with this he has one amp so it doesnt really matter. I doubt there was much tuning involved anyways.
Installation is going to be the main reason for a blown sub, given the user isn't ignorant.

I didn't say it was harder now did I? You have more of a chance making an error with 2 ports than one, it is that simple.

How is tuning easier? I would say it is easier with a shared chamber, given the subs are in the same exact airspace with the same exact port, this goes back to your chance of error, if your 1/4" off on one box than the other, tuning is going to be more difficult.

Like I said before, almost every box I see with 2 subs is a single chamber box, it is just more pratical to build it like that.
