Yup each part in the series had little to do with the previous installation.
BUT each game still had ties to one another in that there was a magic aspect mix of tech/non-tech weaponry mix of advanced technology and old school and a little change in races present (ie: Moogles Dragoons Chocobos etc).
So thats my complaint. The only thing the movie had somewhat in common with the game was the use of a spirit based system of power. I was expecting the movie to be a bit less centered on technology but oh well.
