I had to do this as well, for the same reason... I was using my sb-600 on a stand with umbrella and the wind caught it.

I had some problems getting the tube back in on mine and ended up just melting a little bit of the clear housing with my soldiering iron to get the tube to seat correctly.
Ended up working fine, the rest of the time I owned it
