I'd say it's a good time to buy a car. If im not mistaken, dealers aren't giving much leeway to their economical cars, since that's what they're moving right now. To be honest, anything smaller than a big V8 will suit just fine. The difference between a V6 that gets mid/high 20s and a 4 cylinder that goes into the low 30s..Isn't much a difference at all. They aren't selling many bigger engine sedans, so you may get a good deal..and that savings will even you out with the fuel costs in the long run. And you have a car with some balls, a higher trim level..and something a little nicer to drive around in, rather than a stripped down, cheaply made grocery getter. :/

Not to mention the incentives dealers are offering, extended warranties, free gas cards, free service appointments, oil changes..etc. Gas is expensive, just a fact of life now.

Hybrids are a joke. They're expensive, and you're breaking even in the fuel savings. Especially the SUV's and sedans like the corollas and camrys.
