Default 1995 Accord question HELP!

Have a 1995 Honda Accord EX sedan. This thing runs really well considering the miles, I haven't owned it that long.

A problem arose starting last week with the overdrive. It usually occures when the car is warmed up. I'll try to explain it the best I can.

The car shift smoothly and without issue. Once I am at cruising speed (fourth gear), the car starts to "studder" when cruising/accelerating slowly between 1500 and 2000 RPM. It's almost as if the car isn't "breathing" right. If I floor it, it downshift and accelerates with no issue. It only happens between those two RPM levels and only in fourth gear...and the kicker is it doesn't happen every time, just when it wants to! Occasionally it will also happen in reverse, but only when applying gas.

I tested the tranny fluid in nuetral and while the car was in gear and everything seems normal. The fluid is pink-ish, there is NO burning smell, and no metal shards. Again, the car shifts perfectly otherwise and runs great. There is no slippage or hard shifting. My mechanic buddy stopped by really quick, tested it out, and advised me that it most likely wasn't a tranny problem but a sensor issue, like the car (at those RPM's) wanted to switch between the overdrive gear and the passing gear constantly but doesn't.

I have also read online that a bad EGR valve could cause this. Considering how great the car runs otherwise, I am inclined to believe the tranny is doing fine. Anyone have any ideas/experience with this? Sensor or EGR? Something else?
