I'm not even from the area. I read about this on different forums.
So, there are plenty of crime worse than than, including something involving far more than $16,000 or more than material goods.
There are threats of violence against Joe and when carried out, they could be seen as evidence to cause harm and the whole scandal isn't going to get that person out of being criminally charged with battery/assault.
In this community, this issue is seen as life or death matter, however the whole point of the court system is to have this evaluated as objectively as possible following the law, intentions of the subject, and prior rulings.
I don't know Mr. Dono well enough and his standings in his community I'm aware there's more to the world than "internets reputation". The man doesn't deserve more, or less, punishment because he's Joseph Dono. He deserves whatever punishment based on his prior convictions and other factors courts typically consider.
Some things suggested here are irrational from neutral perspectives
