Test mules are frequently wrapped like that to keep journalists from seeing things that the manufacturers don't want to be seen yet. That includes hiding the emblems.
Why does the new Honda hybrid look like a Prius? Did you read Zate's discussion above? Why does an F1 car look like an F1 car?
Uber-high-mileage hybrids are purpose built. If it's build to seat 4 people comfortably, be aerodynamic, and be as efficient as possible... it's going to end up being about the same size and shape as the Prius.
Interesting side note... I noticed at an autocross one day that my Yaris has EXACTLY the same windshield and roofline profile as several other economy cars... on that day, I was parked next to a Civic and a Mazda 3... it was like they were all built to fit the same template. I'm sure that has something to do with aerodynamics, as well.
