Yeah but if you are gonna go through all of the hassle of doing that you may as well put some pistons in. then since he has it apart he needs to do something about the heads right? At the least rebuild the stock ones (but why?). Then a cam (since it is apart), Arp bolts, gaskets, intake(why reuse the stock one?), etc... See, it becomes a little more involved than "rings, bearings,etc". I mean going that route you have just added a couple more thousand on top of the blower.

Until he is ready to put heads on it I wouldn't even go past taking the valve covers off.

Remember these motors had moly rings from the factory, excellent ring seal for a production engine. Like the good Dr. said, it is barely broken in.
