Stock 99+ Cobra gear (IIRC) should be 3.55

Yes the 96-98 axle is 3/4 inch narrower on each side.

This does not effect the interchangability. They both bolt to each other.

If you run 17x8 or 17x9 wheels then you'll notice a slight gap between the fender and edge of tire. 17x10.5 fit nicely. I run 17x10.5 on mine.

For perfect width your better off with a 99+ GT or Mach1 axle housing. How ever,.. with 96 - 98 rear you could get away with smaller wheel offset that you couldnt do with 99+ solid rear. For example,.. a 17x12 wheel will fit with the quad shocks removed. You can not do this with 99+ axle.
