Default a/c whoes...

So, I'm driving around in a stock SOHC. (keeps me from getting so many tickets) Seeing as how I only paid 800 bucks for it, the AC doens't work. I decided I would dump in some nifty green dye to see if I could find the leak considering all of the parts apear to work. So I unscrew the dust cover/cap. And go to screw on the adapter. Thats when the line completly broke off. Looking at it, you can tell that a part of it was cracked previously and the little bit of stress from srewing the adapter on finished it off.
Not knowing much at AC stuff, I don't know if I need to replace the whole line or if it can be repaired. If it can be repaired, can it be done still in the car, or does the line need to be completely removed?
The break is just before the compressor, a few inches away from where it bolts to the compressor. (great description, I know)
I'll have to see what I can do about getting a picture of it just for clearification.
Thanks for the help
