None of this is surprising.

Electric motors are:

1: VERY efficient. Their thermodynamic efficiency approaches unity (100%), versus the ~30% efficiency of an internal combustion engine.

2: Produce torque from 0rpm. In fact, they produce PEAK torque at 0rpm.

3: Have effective torque over a much wider rpm range than internal combustion engines.

4: Electric motors are much lighter and more reliable than internal combustion engines, with fewer moving parts. The caveat is that the energy source is generally much heavier than that of internal combustion engines (batteries produce far less energy per pound than gasoline or diesel fuel does)

Once fuel cell technology becomes more mature, You'll be seeing some FAST fuel cell vehicles. Hydrogen offers energy density greater than combustible fuels but with the advantage of the thermodynamic efficiency of an electric vehicle. You get the best of both worlds. More energy per pound of fuel with a greater portion of that energy converted to useful (ie, mechanical, not thermal) forms of energy.
