Thermostats are intended to keep an engine warm, not cool. Its necessary for coolant to get a little higher so the engine can reach proper operating temp. for economy, you want the higher. It really makes a difference during the summer though, when you have no thermostat. I prefer to have coolant flowing all the time, and sacrificing the extra mpg, to run a little richer.
