That said, pull the drivetrain and put it in storage along with the rest of the parts you take off. Do a dual carb L20B with an FS5 tranny. A set of good tires and some Koni struts and you'll have a winner.
It's not like the car is a Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe or a Rolls Royce Silver Phantom II, so go ahead and mod it. Make it reliable however you can with modern stuff. Dealing with carbs every day sucks, trust me. I'm still trying to get a hold of my Triumph guy for you. I need some inlet/runner measurements.
