Depth of Field. Larger aperture (smaller f-number) means narrower DOF. Smaller aperture (larger f-number) means wider DOF. Wider and narrower referring to the distance from front to back, if that makes sense.

You don't necessarily need a tripod to change your depth of field. Kick your camera into aperture priority mode and try it out.
