disconnect the outers by forcefully removing the cotter pin. Then remove the castle-ated nut and hit the outer tie rod stud with a hammer until it comes off. If you are not using new outer tie rods, then do not damage the threads on the old ones, use a rubber or plastic mallet to tap them off of the upright/spindle.

remove the inners from the rack by undoing the inner tie rod boot. Use an adjustable crescent wrench on the flat part closest to the rack and turn to the left until it is off of the rack.


you will most likely need to use new cotter pins on the outers, as the old ones may come off in pieces.

your inner tie rod boots will probably be torn, so it will be easy to move them out of the way to access the flat section of the inner rod. You should replace them with new ones if they are torn.


bring your car to an alignment place and make sure the steering is centered
