you'd have to pull the plugs on those cylinders too for it to be theoretically safe.
cadillacs used to do this, and GM is trying it again now i think...so is honda on the new accord v6. it's still wear and tear because the pistons are still moving.
now if they had separate cranks that could disengage, it might be a little more feasible. *runs to patent office*
