Default SOHC troubleshooting help needed

its a 1990 stock 240 5spd.
When I got the car, the timing guide failed which caused the chain to jump. It happened at idle so not a lot of damage was done, other than to the guides. I torn the motor down, and replaced all of the timing crap. Got it all back together and I wasn't getting oil pressure. From what I was able to tell, the previous owner didn't really change the oil.... ever... which killed the pump, and in turn, caused the chain to get hung up on the guide. So I installed the new pump. Now, the motor won't run correctly. You have to hold the distributor all the way advanced, way passed were the bolts will let it go, and you have to give it gas. If you just hold the throttle still, it will die off. It runs ok, as long as you are opening the throttle. Once it warms up, it will try to idle, but it won't last more than a few seconds. I thought I might have messed up installing the timing, but everything is lining up the way it is supposed to, when it is supposed to. I checked compression, its fine... it isn't fantastic, but I've seen them running a lot better with a lot worse compression. You can tell it has 160,xxx miles. I replaced the fuel pump with the walboro out of my coupe. I pulled the fuel rail to see if the injectors are firing properly. It isn't a shit load of gas, but that was also with the throttle closed and just being turned by the starter... Its got newer plugs. The wires are good according to my muti meter. The cap and rotor are newer. I'm not really experienced with single cams, that and I've never had a motor act like this.
- Would a vacuum leak cause this? I know a leak would cause problems with idle and make it run rough, but I don't know if it would cause this problem...
- Would lack of fuel cause this? The injectors are spraying fuel. It looks like a good spray, but I don't know it if it enough. Maybe the FPR is bad....
- Would a bad MAF cause this? I doubt it is bad, the kid was driving it when it died and I got it 2-3 weeks later.

I can't get it to run long enough to do the carb cleaner/starter fluid/etc vacuum leak check. Are there common places to check for something un plugged?

Thanks for the help
