on the the steering wheel column, there is a switch, if you happen to be detailing your car and accidently turned it on, the parking lights will come on and stay on, if you have the keys in the car or not it could be possible he hit the switch in disorientation also. This one almost got me too. This is 99% likely the case, unless something else is wrong which is possible seeing how it was involved in a accident.
