I see lots of both on the road still. Whats your point?
Bottom line is, Ford isn't going to offer the 100K mile warranty on all their products anytime soon. It's simple economics. Ford sells lots of cars. As does GM, but if Ford offers 100K powertrain warranties on its products it will be facing some big expenses down the road. With sagging sales and big employee pensions, FOMOCO can't afford to throw out big warranty sales incentives. However GM on the otherhand thinks its a worthwhile gamble.
Basically it worked for the Korean manufactures. Nobody looked twice at a Kia or Hyundai until they offered a limted 100K powertrain warranty (emphasis on limited.) This enticed buyers to give them a try. It worked, they sold lots of cars, (and repaired lots of cars) but they did manage to get foot-hold on the consumers. They could afford to take the big hit for the long term pay-off. They didn't have big retiree pensions or a big model line-up. It was a gamble for them, they either needed to try something drastic or face going out of business in the states. And the gamble worked, now, thanks to increased profits from selling crappy Sephias and Elantras (with big warranties), they can now focus their cash on making some decent cars.
Basically its all covered here:
