No, you're right. Anyone who wants to defend it is flat out wrong.
Granted some people have different tastes than others, hence having a behemoth like that, but just like why some people have their own hobbies, this is his equivalent "just because". The only difference is his vehicle is illegal, impractical, and unsafe.
