You can't even buy parts for a grand.

$450 for pistons
$300 for rods
$100 to $200 for bearings
$150 for gaskets and seals
$120 for new oil pump
$80 for new water pump
$100 for new timing belt and tensioner
$120 for ARP's

That is over $1500 right there in just parts. So I'd say save up at least $3000 if you want the engine rebuilt by someone who is actually going to do it right.
