Honestly if hes never used either. Though i've seen a few fresh ppl get lost with Nikons. I use a Canon and Nikons are confusing in the menu system to me just cause im not used to it.

Every major manufacturer has a good starter kit setup, Pentax, Olympus, Nikon, Canon, Samsung, Sony, and Fuji. They all have good starter setups for $500-$600 range. The real major plus to Canon and Nikon is the abundance of third party support and pricing for them.
