The 417 rwhp is probably just above the AVG for LS1 heads and cam and they are everywhere and since prices are coming down everyone is getting them. And people who daily drive thier LS1s can still do so without a problem.
Is that with AC, powersteering, etc. in the stang? Daily drivable mild mannered? Not peaky?

Also...this package that made 417 is very mild in some areas. I can guarentee you with a few more upgrades 440-450 rwhp or more is possible. As a matter of fact...the latest heads & cam packages that use the more expensive L S 6 heads have been putting down 460-475 rwhp :o

Oh...and you can get a 98-99 LS1 Camaro for between 9k and 11k all day now.

To me it doesnt get much better if you want an excellent daily driver that will knock the socks off most things on the street and still be capable of running deep 11s.

A 347 shortblock costs about $1,400, cheap if you ask me considering the cost of a newer LS1. The blocks are good to 550 h.p. after that the crack the main webbing. I guess I could just take the easy way with the current 302 and spray it to get 10's.

A 347 with a hydraulic cam making over 450 h.p. is very easy because you have not seen one does not mean they do not exist, they are out there. On the other hand I have not seen to many 15 year old Camaro / F-Bodies running around with the stock bottom end, 80K miles, and 250+ passes at the track. Again a testament to a cheap and durable package Ford put out many years ago.

Mine has power steering, full interior and I removed the a/c because I had constant a/c leakage problems. Damn Fords.

Mild mannered ? Peaky ? I guess that is in the eye of the beholder. Mine runs almost to cold and can make run after run at the track with no cool down and then drive home. You have seen me do this a few times. So to answer that question, yes mild mannered.

And the fact that you can get one of these $30K LS1 cars a few years later for $10K tells me all I need to know and re-afirms why they are no longer in production.
