No exhaust will sound good on a V6. There will also be no performance game either so tell him to leave it stock for his and everyone else's good.
I had a V6 Mustang with true dual exhaust and a K&N back in the day. It would seriously hold its own against the 94-97 GT's (stock of course). Never had it dyno'd, but that car saw some decent gains from the exhaust and air filter alone.
As far as sound...you are right, it will never sound like a V8. The Flowmasters sound pretty decent. For more of a deep, mellow tone, go with something like a Borla or Dynomax muffler. I personally like the Flowmaster sound...gives it kind of a deep raspy sound, but not "ricey" at all.
