you need a meter. check the voltage going to the battery while its running, when you get it started, it should be above 12 volts to it in order for it to take a charge. there are also fusible links going to the post on the starting solenoid that the positive battery hooks to. check those, the one coming from the alternator feeding the battery could be bad and not letting the alt. do its job.

on a 3g there are 3 wires on the plug and one post.
one wire goes from the plug to the stator
one goes to a switched 12 v on a fuse/fusible link to tell the alt to turn on and charge.
jump power to the green wire, i think it is the middle one, see if the alt kicks on, if it does, you have a bad fuse/link.
the other goes to the post on the back.
