im not tryin to be a jackass, but there are plenty of occasions where a "chewed up" piston or a "messed up" piston (as you put it) could be missing chunks, ringlands, torn up rings, etc, and all these can lead to cylinder wall damage.

until that guy offered you $20, you hadnt said what was bad, so how was he supposed to know?

$150 for a good block/crank is not a bad deal, provided you can hone and go.
