You do get a noticeable difference when your speakers are connected to an amplifier...however I just put a pioneer headunit and speakers (nothing special at all) with some audiobahn speaker wire and just by being connected to the headunit... a couple hundred dollar speaker system - sounds good for what it is. Sony amp for two soundstream 10's
