The RCA leads feed the internal amp just like they feed an external one. If you short circuit the external RCA lead, the internal signal is short circuited as well. That is why some headunits offer you the option to turn off the internal amp if you are using an external one. Even if it is not in use, the internal amplifier still feeds off the signal and can reduce the output voltage.

Sometimes it will stay dead, others removing the short will remedy it. Or course it is probably damaged but may still work.
