sounds like an igniton problem by "sounding like a wrx" it's mis firing. 1 or more of the cylinders isnt getting fire.

It could be a headgasket, BUT is there oil in the water or vise versa? Does it over heat?

Have you checked the dizzy? hell it could just be a fouled plug, injector could be sticking....look into it more.
