Hmm, in no particular order.

If you stop on your own....be prepared to fight for that re-run at "larger" events. At smaller ones, explaining your reasoning to the powers at large should be enough to clear all confusion and you should be good to go.

If you go off-course, do NOT try to save it once your off. Just let it runs its course, and enjoy the ride. Once you've straightened yourself back out, proceed onto the course. If possible, pull onto a part of the course thats not being used as part of the autocross track and proceed to the end. Remember to trip the lights as you finish. If you must travel along the designated autocross track, do so at a semi-slow pace, keeping enough attention on the car behind you so he doesn't have issues with catching up with you. Skip slaloms and such and if possible, dont drive on "the line", as this is where you'll be leaving whatever debris your car picked up in the off-course excursion.

This is just my nickel's worth of thought on the subject.
