maybe you lost a cylinder
he never said if he's checked the coolant or oil. you could have a head gasket leak, still have plenty of power and just burn the coolant off leaking in the cylinder. white smoke is coolant, and it is probably just a slight leak.
plus with him having the pistons out, a head gasket seems the best bet.
