In 98 they didn't make an XLS, only an XL and XLT, the XLT would normaly have the XLT emblem on the rear hatch/tailgate, either seperately or on the same emblem as the word Explorer. If you didn't notice it I will assume it to be an XL.

correction, i was trying to find out which it was and couldnt but i found out its a 98 but it looks like hte 99 which i thought was a different look....so iit appears its a 98 just fyi.......everything works if there is a way i can tell if its the xlt or xls let me know and i will find it out.
