I have done this. To my knowledge it is not illegal. I've walked the bike up onto the walkway at bestbuy when they open in front of the officer there on countless occasions. In fact, one of the managers there has a bike which he also parks right there as well. At my work, I have a spot in those yellow lines in which security specifically lets me park. Since they have no motorcycle only parking.
