If it's an OBDII system (after 95 on Miatas anyway) you can take your car to Autozone where they will plug a diagnostic unit in to read the codes for free.

If it's pre-ODBII you should be able to read the codes from the sequesnce of a flashing light on the dash then translate it from an enthusiast site online for your car.
