Default Buying a popped motor questions

A few questions for everyone. I would like to get a built motor for my car. I'm thinking about buying a used usdm Sti short (or maybe even long) block to build up. New short block would be nice but $1700 plus shipping will not be nice.

So my question is this: Since the motor will probably have thrown something or otherwise be toast (as bought) what is usually the condition of a motor that has failed? I'm just trying to get an idea of what to look out for. Also to determine if I'll have to bore it out or not.

Like say when a cylinder leans out, what usually happens? When someone runs out of water on water injection? Ringland(s) fail? Do any or all of those conditions require the motor to be bored?

Thanks.
