Well, the proper way is to replace the filter drier and orifice tube (any time the system is open they recommend). Then once everything is in place pull a vacuum on the system and fill.

Real world, sometimes you can get away without replacing anything but the line. However, humidity is what kills the filter drier, and its been really humid the past couple of days.
